You can recover deleted files on Windows and Mac using built-in system utilities, native backup tools, and 100% free or freemium third-party recovery software.
Before attempting any recovery, stop using the affected drive immediately. When files are deleted, the computer marks that storage space as “available,” but the data remains until it is overwritten by new data or background system tasks. Phase 1: The First Line of Defense (No Software Needed)
Always start with native temporary folders before trying more complex recovery methods. On Windows
Recycle Bin: Open the Recycle Bin on your desktop. Locate your file, right-click it, and choose Restore to return it to its original path.
Undo Command: If you literally just deleted the file, press Ctrl + Z on your keyboard to instantly undo the action.
Trash Bin: Open the Trash icon on your Dock. Right-click the missing file and click Put Back to return it to its original folder.
Undo Command: Press Command + Z immediately after an accidental deletion to reverse it. Phase 2: Restore from Native Backups
If the trash folders have been emptied, you can retrieve files using built-in operating system backups—provided you had them enabled prior to deletion. Windows File History & Previous Versions
